Data portability is a feature
Too many apps trap your data. They make it easy to import, hard to export. We think that's wrong - especially for something as important as medical records.
Recordwell exports your data in standard JSON format with clear documentation. Any competent developer can build an importer. You're never stuck with us.
Export options
You can export your data in multiple ways:
- Encrypted backup - Your data stays encrypted, protected by your password. Useful for secure storage or transfer to a new device.
- Decrypted export - Plain JSON you can read, process, or import elsewhere. Human-readable and machine-parseable.
- Per-person export - Export just one family member's records, useful for sharing with healthcare providers.
No subscription hostage
If you stop paying for Sync, you don't lose your data. The free app works completely offline with local storage. Your records stay on your device, fully functional.
The paid Sync service adds convenience - multi-device access, cloud backup, family sharing. But it's never required to access what's already yours.
Open format
Our export format is documented and versioned. It includes:
- All record types (vaccines, medications, conditions, allergies, notes)
- Custom record schemas you've created
- Attachments (with checksums for verification)
- Metadata about encryption if applicable
We publish the format specification so others can build compatible tools.
